Dress for Success

At Wild Whimsy Forest School, embracing the elements is part of our everyday adventure. As we venture into nature's classroom year-round, dressing appropriately for the weather ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all. From rain showers to snowflakes, our dress code follows Mother Nature's lead, promoting preparedness and positivity in every season. Equipped with the right gear and the right attitude, our students are ready to thrive in any outdoor environment.

A few essential items are provided by the school to ensure each student is equipped for their explorations, including a luggage tag for identification and a field notebook for recording their outdoor learning. Families are responsible for supplying additional gear tailored to their child's needs. While we suggest several items for your consideration, this list is not exhaustive. Please feel free to contact us directly with any inquiries regarding the recommended gear or for further assistance.

Gear Recommendations

We empower our students to embrace independence and responsibility, starting with their own gear. Each child carries their own backpack, equipped with essentials for their outdoor adventures. From gear to snacks, water, and supplies, our students take pride in managing their own materials, fostering confidence and self-reliance. Ensuring comfort in all weather conditions, here are some essential items your child should have to fully engage in our immersive outdoor learning experience.      *required

Backpack*

We recommend a waterproof backpack with a capacity of 8 to 12 liters, ensuring ample space for daily essentials in all weather conditions. Look for a design equipped with a chest strap and buckle for added comfort and support during adventures. To enhance weather resistance, consider treating the backpack with waterproofing spray.

Boots

Close-toed shoes are required year-round to ensure safety and best support the development of gross motor skills; please choose footwear with excellent traction for our outdoor adventures. Puddle splashers are a PNW must! We recommend having at least two pairs to rotate between in case one gets waterlogged.

Layers

We recommend packing layers year-round to ensure comfort and adaptability to our ever-changing weather, as well as to help minimize illness and exposure. On the coldest days, please dress your child in a warm base layer (top and bottom), a fleece layer, a puffy layer, and a rainproof outer layer. Keep a change of clothes—including socks and underwear—in a waterproof bag in your child’s backpack at all times.

Hat

Wearing hat is suggested year-round: a rain hat during wet months and a sun hat in summer, to ensure your child stays comfortable and protected in all weather conditions. Apply sunblock (and bug spray if desired) prior to arrival at school. Please keep a stick of sunblock in your child's backpack during sunny months.

Lunchbox

Families are required to send their child with a nutritious lunch and two snacks daily, using containers that the student can open independently; we recommend smaller containers or reusable bags over bulky bento boxes to accommodate developing fine motor skills.

Gloves

We recommend keeping a pair of gardening gloves in your child's backpack year-round to protect against irritants and enhance comfort during gardening, digging, and sand play; for wet and cold days, warm waterproof gloves are also highly recommended.

Socks

High wool socks provide the most warmth and comfort; please ensure your child has an extra pair stored in a waterproof bag in their backpack.
